Dec. 23rd, 2010

I just started writing the memoir.  I now have a newfound respect for the attention span of fiction/non-fiction writers.  I keep allowing myself to get side-tracked so easily...what the.....squirrel.

Anyways, I'll be sending the poetry manuscript out to a few more contests over the next few months and hopefully someone will pick it up.  Thanks to everyone for all their support.  Your awesome comments always motivate me through the slumps.

My christmas present to all of you are these videos that I made of the wrestling team I coach at Hickman High School in Columbia, MO.  These kids always give 100% on the mat and that is every coach's dream.

Quick story on why I coach:  In high school I had an "old school" coach from Iowa, Scott Bartels, that used to wrestle with Dan Gable way back in the day.  Bartels beat my ass every single day and never let me feel sorry for myself.  He instilled a strong work ethic and constant desire to succeed.  I attribute much of my success in life to him.  Also, when I returned from Iraq and got out of the military I was in a binge-drinking funk.  I began coaching 8th grade wrestlers with a buddy of mine just to pass some time and it ended up being one of the most spiritually rewarding experiences of my life.  Watching them wrestle and overcome all the obstacles and hardships I put them through (which was a lot), really helped me get a grasp on what was important in life again and helped me start setting new goals and priorities.  Who would have thought that a bunch of 8th graders would have saved the life of a Spec Ops veteran?  Anyways, I view coaching as a way to give back to those that have given so much to me.

Have a merry Christmas everyone.
